When to Whiten
See a dentist
Before you start whitening your teeth, consider seeing a dentist to have your teeth and gums checked. Peroxide whitening gel on a cavity or exposed root could penetrate deep into your tooth and cause sensitivity.
Should I whiten my teeth before or after braces?
If you are thinking of getting braces or have braces already, teeth whitening should be done after the braces are removed. If whitening is done when the teeth are crooked, it may difficult to distribute the whitening gel evenly on the teeth so you may end up with teeth that are different colors. If teeth whitening is done when the orthodontic braces are still on, not only is it difficult to do, but after your braces are removed you may have dark spots where the whitening gel could not penetrate your teeth under the braces.
You should not try teeth whitening if you have any of the following conditions:
Sensitive teeth
Patients with sensitive teeth and gums may experience an increased sensitivity during or after tooth whitening.
Pregnant
Teeth whitening in pregnant or lactating women is not recommended.
Allergies
Individuals that are allergic to peroxide should not use a bleaching product
Cavities, gum disease, exposed roots
Peroxide whitening gel on a cavity or exposed root could penetrate deep into your tooth and cause sensitivity
