Invisalign Braces
Invisalign vs. Braces

A common question people ask whether or not they should get braces or Invisalign. A 2005 study suggests that Invisalign braces work great for closing mild spaces and straightening front teeth. Invisalign braces may have less success at correcting a severe overbite, underbite, or correcting the way the back teeth bite together. For bite problems and severely spaced or crooked teeth, orthodontic braces can usually deliver a better result.
Modern Invisalign treatment often involves the placement of temporary white “bumps” on some of the teeth to help perform more difficult tooth movements. These bumps help the Invisalign trays “hold” the teeth to straighten them more easily, such as rotating a cylindrical tooth. Typically 4-8 of these white cement bumps are placed, and they are removed without damage to the teeth after treatment is complete.
Another advance in Invisalign treatment involves the use of rubber bands worn between the upper and lower teeth to improve Invisalign’s ability to correct particular bite problems. Your dentist or orthodontist can easily inform you whether Invisalign alone can correct your bite or if an alternative method such as metal or clear braces would be necessary for full bite correction.
In patients who are not ideal candidates for Invisalign, but who really want to limit their time in orthodontic braces, your dentist or orthodontist may suggest starting treatment using Invisalign, but finishing treatment using braces to fine-tune the tooth positions and bite.
